Separate fact from fiction to learn how to select bedding that’s as sustainable as it is stylish.

Myth: If The Label Says "Organic Cotton" It's Totally Organic

Truth: Bedding claiming to use “organic cotton” may not be 100% organic. And even if it is, the item may have been processed with toxins—without regard for worker welfare. To find out, look for certifications from GOTS (ensuring use of organic fibers) and OEKO-TEX (confirming that no harmful chemicals were used), as well as a company’s commitment to ethical manufacturing.

Myth: When sheets are truly organic, their color should be “natural.”

Truth: Let’s face it: beige is blah. And making more sustainable purchases shouldn’t mean you have to skimp on style. When you come across beautiful organic sheets in colors you love, check for the OEKO-TEX seal. It’ll mean no toxic chemicals, heavy metals, or bleaches were used in the dying process.

Myth: A heavy organic comforter is a warmer comforter.

Truth: You don’t need to feel suffocated by a weighty comforter to keep things cozy. Choosing comforters with a fiberfill (like our EcoPure™) ensures your bedding will be lightweight and temperature-insulated all year round. Made from 100% recycled materials, these comforters are fully sustainable—and an earth-conscious alternative to goose and duck down.

Myth: The first clue to better organic bedding? Higher thread count.

Truth: You won’t necessarily get softer, silkier sheets with a thread count in the high hundreds. (In fact, Consumer Reports revealed the best sheets had a thread count around 280.) The real key is the quality of the fiber: even in lower thread counts, higher quality fibers--like those of certified organic cotton--will produce bedding that feels better and lasts longer.

Myth: Real organic sheets are insanely expensive.

Truth: As more people commit to going organic, more companies are learning how to cut down on its cost. For example, at Under the Canopy, we’ve figured out that things like a vertical supply chain, a domestic distribution center, organic cotton bought in bulk, and lower thread counts all result in more affordable prices for our organic bedding—and a more restful night’s sleep for you.
